The Monsoon Bassoon - London, Water Rats Thursday 25th November 1999
Its been a full two months since The Monsoon Bassoon have graced us with their presence. They've been locked away writing new material, while wife of drummer Jim as also been graced with a baby boy Alfie. (Born on the same evening that The Cardiacs played the ULU - now is that a fluke or just plain fate?)

So it's with heavy hearts and expectations high that we find ourselves amongst friends at The Water Rats.

Jim starts off the proceedings with the now signature drum build up to 'The Very Best Of Badluck '97' and the crowd are at last home in the knowledge that they've lost none of their edge. Old favourite '28 Days In A Rocket Ship' makes a welcome return, while brand new song 'Leyline N16' hits the audience square in the stomach. This track is set to become a classic mark my words.

Close to the end of 'Wise Guy' Kavus' amp lead breaks down, and instead of trying to fix the thing, he improvises by swinging the instrument around his head! The set finishes off with the awesome 'King Of Evil'.

All in all a very satisfying performance, and an experience that I personally must have at least once every few months to fill me with hope that not all bands are churning out the same old crap. These guys need a break and need the recognition they deserve. Already looking forward to the next one!
