Monkey Boy - London, Red Eye Sunday 19th September 1999 |
Where do I start? Two bass guitars and a drum set. The first bass is played by Disc Stu - he rolls and lurches backwards and forwards with the rhythm, and has at least 50 different frowns in his repertoire. The second is played by Mark - he plays the "Chainsaw Bass" and is all over the stage pulling strange faces and is NEVER still. The drums are beaten by Paul who also sings...but the twist...Paul controls the way the songs go...they start - they stop - they start again...total confusion (not from the band though, who seem to know exactly what's going on).
It's great fun. I don't think I stopped smiling throughout the entire set. They are all complete loons, that's for sure! At one point Paul stops the song for what seems an eternity..."We've got to rest", he tells us, "it's hard work...look at me!....don't make me show you my ribs". Then they they launch back into orbit, on their mad Monkey Boy rocket.
It's so hard to explain the set. If you haven't seen them yet . DO! - and do it now! If you have seen them, and you don't like them, then, you have no life and no sense of humour - you deserve to rot in hell!
