The evening started off in typical Jazz stylee, with two guys - one sitting down with an acoustic guitar, and the other standing with a double bass. A bit of chit-chat in the audience, as office workers filter in through the doors. Tourists also wander in, and it seems most people are here because it is the Jazz Café, not because they want to see a particular band. Fools - they don't know what's about to hit them! The lads wander on stage and begin to strap on their bass guitars. You can see the question marks over some of the audience as they wonder where the drummer is. The opening number is quite simply a tune made up on the spot. Now the crowd is confused. 'For Danny' is next. Quiet, minimalist tune, with Jon using the extreme ends of the strings to punctuate the deep, throaty plucking by Mark, with high, spiky flashes. As the audience becomes restless and starts to talk amongst themselves, the band launch into 'Seventyseven A' and now the polite applause that started with the first few numbers is beginning to grow, as more people begin to see the plot. Choice quote of the night...Mark - "Hello....nice to be back here at the Jazz Café again". Great piece of sarcasm, totally lost on the crowd. By the time the end of the set comes and a couple of very noisy tracks are laid at the feet of the punters, courtesy of Crawford's manic like chords, it becomes impossible for the crowd to talk, so they are now forced to listen. The end result - the underground scurried around like a mole - poked it's head up into the mainstream's public for half an hour, exposing itself to bewildered passers by, before climbing back down and shutting the door. If only a handful of the general public look closer into the events of tonight, the victory will be Rothko's. skippy Rothko setlist: Intro (made up on the spot) / For Danny / Breatharian / Seventyseven A / Open / Shock of Self / Us To Become Sound / Outro / Goodnight. |
