Billy Mahonie - Croydon, Clocktower Arts Centre Saturday 4th September 1999
I arrived late, about 21:30, not helped by wasting 20 minutes trying to find somewhere to park the car. There's the Clocktower but how do you get in? Up some stairs - the door is locked - bugger! Oh - there's the security man...helpfully sitting in his car outside in the street...up some more steps, where the signpost says cinema...how obvious!...not! I'm told to go to the bar to get a ticket. I then spend 10 minutes waiting to purchase a ticket, while the lady who is dishing out the popcorn discusses with someone else if they get a concession. Fuck me...it's only a fiver - sort your life out! I get a ticket...it's number 19...oh dear things look bad.

Through another door and into the venue. Looks a nice size...it's taller than it's long...actually it's bloody tall! It could be an old library...there are lots of very old looking books all around the first level terrace. Can't still be used as a library though. Apparently I've missed some arty film that could have been made by a twelve year old...thank fuck for small mercies! It's got the atmosphere of a youth club, or a private party where no-one has turned up, except the pissed bloke, and a gang of youths.

Billy Mahonie finally take the stage and begin to play...to all of 35 people...most of which don't give a flying fuck about what's going on in front of them. The set goes well, even though Hywell breaks a string and Kev blows his amp! 'Hoon', a personal favourite of mine, still leaps out and grabs you by the throat, before spinning you around and letting go, leaving you dazed and confused. Well at least some of the audience are now paying attention...well...it's mostly only the previous bands' table...but at least they're now begining to get the plot! The set ends with the superb 'Are We Rolling' followed by 'World Inaction'. A breathtaking performance seen by...no-one! I guess you could see it as a warm up for tomorrow's gig in Brighton, as part of the 'Brighton Crawl'...and, if it's anything like tonight's, will go down a storm. Get some ear plugs for your Granny, Brighton - The Mahonie's are coming to town!
