It's not the three-bass trio of old though, as seven, (yes count them), seven musicians step on to the non-existent stage. There's two guitars, keyboards, trumpet, drums… oh and a couple of basses of course. Those in the know around the scene will recognise the extra members as the band Delicate AWOL, but the similarities end there. You might expect that this would be the sound of the two bands melded together in some bizarre genetic experiment, but far from it. If you listen there are still the sounds of the Rothko of old - hard plucked bass-lines that still form the basis of the tune, but now instead of another two basses forming the sound-scapes around this, we have a whole plethora of instruments forming layers of sound. For those, like me, who are used to the Rothko of old, it's sometimes bewildering, and takes a little getting used to, but still sounds great. All songs tonight are brand-new and having their first public airing, so the band are understandably a little nervous. But the crowd are appreciative to the extent that not one single punter is upstairs in the other room - the place is packed! And I think it worked well - apart from maybe the third track, which seemed a little too busy, this concept works well. Over time of course tucks and tweaks will be made, but a promising start this is. skippy set list: This Lake Of Hope / I Sense You Fading Away / Fragile Strands Of Time / On The Day We Said Goodbye / Deepest Shadows Have Light |
