Like Helmet and Prong jamming with Dillinger Escape Plan, this is brutal, stomping metal set to a jazz score, all biting riffs and elusive time signatures that make for a thrilling, unpredictable ride. The musicianship on display is at times bewildering, especially when you realise this monster is created by a 3-piece, but thankfully it is never too technical to leave mere mortals cold; the relentless, grinding muscle of 'Bloodmoss' and 'It's Been A Hard Year For Mr David Cyberman' ensures that this is so much more than a mere lesson in self-indulgence. Foe are that rarity in modern metal - intensity with both intelligence and a tune - and this is a hugely exciting statement of intent. Steve JBMTS |
