Tonight was kicked of in fine Seafood style with 'Folk Song Crisis' just to get us into the mood. We were then treated to a few new songs, which we were told, was the point of the gig. Back to the familiar with 'This Is Not An Exit' and we delve into the "Seafood moment" of the night. (Come on - it wouldn't be the same without one!). One or two bars into the song and David stops as his guitar is out of tune. "Sorry, but I'm a perfectionist" he tells us. Kevin then starts to chat with the crowd while both Charles and David tune their respective guitars. "Our next secret gig will be at the Brixton Academy!" he says. Cue lots of laughter from the audience. "Yeah, a secret gig in Brixton". More laugher. "Well it fucking will be!" he exclaimed, until he suddenly remembers his mum is here to see them "Sorry mum", was the hasty reply. David's now ready, and in the process of jumping to his feet, bangs his head on the end of Charles' guitar neck, "Professional touring band" he says with that wry smile and eyes skyward. 'Similar Assassins' was a new track that I'd heard live twice already, but now they've given it a new chorus, and, for me at least, it seems to have watered the song down a bit from the original. Then a real new one called 'Splinter'. My god, what have they been doing in the USA! This is the best song I have ever heard them play. It rocks, it's loud, and everyone is smiling. This really is Seafood at their best! They seem to be stronger, louder and even better for their trip to the USA, and it suits them! They end with 'FSC 2' and a massive amount of feedback at the end that went on for a good 3 minutes after they'd left the stage. It's a joy to see "The Food" back on the live circuit, and with the album imminent. skippy set list: Folk Song Crisis / Western Battle / Cloaking / Pleasurehead / This Is Not An Exit / Similar Assasins / Splinter / FSC 2 |
