Yes - Denver, Citylights Pavilion Monday 22nd July 2002
I'm not really sure why I decided to go and see Yes - they're just one of those bands I've never seen, and not ever likely to go and see in the UK. But while stuck a mile high in Denver for six weeks, what the heck!

The venue was on the same grounds as the Pepsi Centre, and is about a 4500 capacity open tented affair. A novel idea.

Lots of complicated guitar riffs from Steve Howe as you might expect, but I'm afraid the band are stuck in the 70's. The stereotypical 70's singing from Jon Anderson was the thing that really grated throughout. You know the kind of thing - high pitched heavy metal type stuff, that gets right on your tits after 0.34 seconds.

But more horrors were to come. Steve Howe produced an electric mandolin for one song - mmm. Then I look around to find longhaired stoners standing up and playing air guitar, like the instrument really is in their hands. For the love of god, I really am in the wrong place tonight.

I leave the time-warped cluster of fans early, while they bathe in the past.

The only plus side? Rick Wakeman dressed in his trademark long wizards type coat, switching between playing at least ten different keyboards surrounding him - always having a laugh and never taking himself too seriously. Maybe the rest of the band and the audience could take a few notes from this man.
