Ursa - Hounslow, The Rifleman Saturday 13th January 2001
At last - the first gig of the year for me after the wasteland that is the Xmas period. The Rifleman in deepest Hounslow was the venue. Handy, as this is only about 2 miles from where I live. It's a pub that I'd never been to and didn't even know that they put on live music. They've converted the beer garden into a long venue with a low ceiling, and with the sound desk and lights it makes quite a good attempt at being a proper venue - even though the lead mic had masses of feedback, the sound was better than Upstairs in the Smoke Room. (Surprised? Thought not).

Ursa launched into the first three songs without a break and sounded huge. This was certainly better than when I last saw them play, with no technical hitches (apart from Jodie having to dodge the electric shocks from the lead mic), and no false starts. They are getting much tighter, and the best comparison I can come up with is like a dirty Geiger Counter with vocals. The crowd of about 15 certainly enjoyed the show, and this will be a good warm up for their gig with The Monsoon Bassoon at the Monarch next month.

Watch out for their future gigs, and go see!
