Oil Red O / Sennen / Drowning By Numbers - London, Dublin Castle Wednesday 10th October 2001
We have three bands here of varying ages but get their inspiration from similar sources. All have obviously listened to Godspeed a great deal, but there the similarity ends.

First up were Drowning By Numbers. These guys are painfully young, but have the added twist of a keyboard player. Think of all the best loud parts of Godspeed and you're pretty much there. They feel that there really is no need to build up the noise slowly, why not just go straight to the best parts? Why not indeed?

Next were Sennen, who have a couple of years on the first band. They all, no doubt, also own Mogwai albums, as the songs are very predictable - you can virtually guess the tune a couple of bars before they play it. This band also managed to have the most punters in the venue to watch them. But a word of advice - if you invite all your mates and work colleagues along to watch, see if you can get them to stop bloody talking loudly throughout your set! I'd reconsider whether they were there for the beer or to see you - I think it was the former.

Headlining were Oil Red O, who seem to have Billy Mahonie as an influence. Unfortunately for me, there really is only one band who can fill that space in the music industry, and they do it so well there really isn't any room for other bands to stand alongside BM. Or maybe it was that all three bands fit so easily into the same genre, and that by the time ORO came onstage, I'd had my fill?

Drowning By Numbers got my vote for this evenings performance though.
