Kaito - London, Dublin Castle Tuesday 7th August 2001
Simon, oh Simon - what have you unleashed? Is there really room for another band that has strange sounding random guitar sounds and shouty girl vocals? (Think Melt Banana, Elastica, Fiji, Flying Lizards, The Fall, Frank Chickens etc - see the previous review). Of course there is! You can find little parts of all these bands in Kaito, but to their credit they do their own thing, not pandering (get it?) to any particular style, and just doing what they want - and all from the land of Alan Partridge.

The result is a very enjoyable live set that just makes you want to smile. The tunes stick in your head for days - and days, and days. It's like there's some mad genius at work. The music fits into the late night alternative slot, but would also fit equally into daytime radio without much effort. From the mental slide-guitar frenzy that is Trailous to the manic singing in Shoot Shoot, they have the ability to hold a crowds attention, just to see what happens next.

Let's get rid of all those manufactured bands who can't even play instruments, and replace them with this lot - fun and exciting - everyone would end up walking around with big grins on their faces - it'll never happen, but it gets my vote all the same.

skippy
