It was an interesting sound and most of the crowd paid attention to them, as the guitarist worked the stage, while the singer had to contend with a leg problem, as his right leg was heavily shacked. At the end the percussionist jumped onto a pogo-stick in the shape of a man, jumped around a bit, them jumped into all his gear, bringing it and himself crashing in the audience. Strobe light and the sound of a claxon signal the arrival of The Melvins. Dale has dispensed with the Speedo’s and is dressed in a little frilly number tonight, complete with pink streaked hair. Kevin’s mumu is now so short; it’s more like a shirt. They ripped though the set with only two breaks in the sound. Luckily for me Buzzo was stage left so I had a great view, and got some good photos. It was crowded but not to the point of uncomfortable, as most people were probably here to see Patton anyway. Some people did actually retreat a bit when The Melvins were playing, so they probably scared them a little, as they are far more powerful than Tomahawk. At the end of the set, Dale went off first followed by Buzzo, leaving Kevin to play for a bit longer. When he decided to call it quits, he simply fell to the floor by his cab, and there he stayed while the crew packed up equipment and adjusted stuff. He only got up a couple of minutes before he was due to play again. Mike Patton arrives on stage to check out and adjust his equipment. The crowd start to go nuts. So Tomahawk arrive, and Pattern is all over the stage and performing his usual vocal acrobatics. I lost interest about half way through to be honest, as Tomahawk are a bit of a let down after seeing The Melvins. They’re not a bad band by any means, but The Melvins are obviously better. skippy The Melvins set-list: Night Goat / Lovely Butterfly / Amazon / AMAZON / The Bit / Revolve / Judy / Braincentre / Let It All Be / At A Crawl / Zodiac / Black Stooges / Foaming |
