Caretaker - Pause [ep]
How do you describe the sound of this young band? I hate describing music - always better to listen I say. Well - they are from the Aldershot area and consist of Harry on vocals and guitar, Seb on bass and vocals, John on guitar and Chris on drums.

The first track 'Rangefinding' starts off with 10 seconds of just low key drums followed, one by one, by the other instruments until it builds up and the singer cuts in. The singing is very much in the Muse style - quite high and tortured, and suddenly the rest of the band go off on an Idlewild style break... all loud and angular. Sound great. This is the track that was their national radio debut, played by Mary-Anne Hobbs on the Radio 1 rock show. She gushed before playing the track that she had fallen in love with it. (Apparently she had only received the CD the same day!)

Second track 'We Watch And Wait' again starts off very low key, (could be a pattern emerging here), before breaking down and surging from hard, loud instrumental pieces to more subtle sections that have you almost holding your breath, so that you don't miss anything.

'Safe As Houses' is a more angular track. This is very reminiscent of Fiji / Scarfo in some parts, but keeping to their own style of playing.

The last track 'Liopleuradon' is an epic. A full 15 minutes long, and it's worth every second. The track starts off quietly and very slowly builds up and gets faster and louder until the singer is almost shouting. The band then go off and do their own thing and it's great. It finishes with very soft vocals and barely there backing from the band.

This is a very grown up sound from a band so young and with only a handful of live performances behind them. They have managed to meld Idlewild, Muse, Fiji and Fourth Quartet into one huge scary monster, and to great effect. Things are looking up!
