Mountain Men Anonymous - Cardiff, Barfly Wednesday 30th May 2001
Does no one in Cardiff eat in the evening? A recommended pub advertises great food, but not in the evening. A café bar serves food every day - but not on a Wednesday. Bleedin Burger King is open though! Poo!

Anyway - a drum kit and three chairs await the band to come on stage. Two guitarists, a bass player and a drummer take to the stage and engage the crowd. Huge walls of sounds are played like their collective lives depended on the performance, then off to a lull where you can actually hear a pin drop in the venue (if only the landlord had tuned off the fruit machine in the back).

Mountain Men Anonymous are like a mini Godspeed - from Wales - but only a four piece - and about 18 years old! It's nice to see youngsters, band and audience alike, appreciate music, and not just the stream of Oasis cover bands that seem to exist in the indie circuit. The music is well thought out and while playing the really, really loud parts (not just really loud parts) the bass player and main guitarist are wriggling and squirming on their seats, while the instruments are cradled on their laps screaming for mercy, while their tormentors just continue to abuse and bend over the poor piece of wood.

It's probably a consequence of not being able to eat on a Wednesday.
