Idlewild / Ikara Colt - Cambridge, Junction Tuesday 30th April 2002
So, it's 7:30pm. We (that's Sam, Lorna, Chris, Mark and yours' truly) arrive at The Junction excited but freezing… after all, it is April and this is Britain. As we enter the Junction, the first support band are playing so, being the typical students that we are, we head to the bar.

Second support band, Ikara Colt, are surprisingly good. By this time we've downed the vodka and cokes and made our way into the ever-growing crowd. Ikara Colt really gets the crowd going, and, although I'm not a big fan of the mod thing they have going on, they're pretty damned good for a support band. After 20 minutes they exit stage left, leaving the crowd alive with anticipation for the band they really came to see.

After what seems like hours of waiting, Idlewild storm onto the stage, welcomed by a mass of screaming fans. They launch straight into Captain, which gets us all moshing immediately; the initial buzz from the crowd is fantastic! After Captain, comes Little Discourage, another favourite with crowd, especially during the chorus when we all wish we'd done our trainers up (?!) Roddy's voice sounds excellent and the band are on top form. This is followed by You Held The World In Your Arms, which, despite only being released a few days before, goes down very well with the crowd, as do These Wooden Ideas and When I Argue I See Shapes. Slap bang in the middle of the set, Idlewild opt for Happy To Be Here Tonight which has, literally, the whole of The Junction singing along - at this point me and Chris have a mini water - fight which is good because everyone is pretty much drenched in sweat… nice…

More crowdsurfing, moshing and general falling over takes place during Rusty and Roseability - the band really give it their all and there is no doubt that the crowd are having a good time.

Idlewild leave the stage after The Remote Part but, after several minutes of shouting "encore!” they are welcomed back on stage, launching immediately into Listen To What You've Got - during which the crowd go absolutely wild. They finish their undoubtedly fantastic set with Film For The Future - Roddy sounds really good and the whole band look as though they've really enjoyed themselves. We had a brilliant night!

After the gig, Sam and me (who was so excited about the fact that he had the same shoes as her!) met the lead singer of Ikara Colt who was very cool indeed! Then, Mark and me decided to swap t-shirts (ha ha - mine actually looked quite good on him!) and a strange man with a video camera filmed us!

All in all it was an absolutely fantastic night!

Thanks to Chris from The Remote Part (check out his website it's excellent!) for help remembering the set list, Lorna for the drinks, Mark for saving my life and Sam for making me get up for college in the morning.
