Six By Seven - London, Astoria Saturday 25th March 2000
This was another of those weird lunchtime Fuji TV gigs for live transmission to Japan, from the good old Astoria. Despite the unfavourable circumstances, Six By Seven delivered. At one point some wally shouted "what’s wrong with the sound" - but from where I stood the sound was pretty good, thank you very much!

So, starting with '10 Places to Die', we started our freebie treat. How this song didn’t smash into the charts defies logic. Tight, taut and totally Six By Seven, Sam Hempton glaring at the audience, daring us not to be impressed - I didn’t defy him. His Gibson, and singer Chris Olley’s Rickenbacker, seem to compliment each other so well. 'Candlelight', perhaps one of their best known songs, was then upon us. Definitely a crowd pleaser.

As the latest album has just been released, we were treated to a fair selection from it; whilst these songs still retain the same dark intensity that marks Six By Seven’s songs, the newer ones now really rock. When they want to rock, they rock, put it that way; a good example being 'Eat Junk Become Junk'. I saw them the previous Monday at an Xfm gig, and for an encore they offered the audience a choice of 'Candlelight' or 'Always Waiting For'... (I think I was the only person who shouted for both!) and bowed to public pressure and played 'Candlelight'. This time the choice was 'Always' or 'European Me' and fortunately for me, 'Always' won as its one of my fave songs. The choice came about due to Chris Olley throwing his set list into the crowd as he strode onto the stage, and I thank the young man who caught it for allowing me to jot down the tracks and especially for his pencil to do so!

Great gig - suffice to say, I walked out of the venue and as I passed the Astoria box office, immediately bought my ticket for their show on the 19th April at the same venue. I can’t wait - or is it that 'I’m Always Waiting For'...
