Reuben - London, Dublin Castle Tuesday 23rd October 2001
Four songs into the set, and all was going to plan in the world of Reuben. Hard, fast, passionate and full of humour.

Two bars into the fifth song and the guitar stops making any noise. Jamie's busy checking all the lead connections while still singing. He gives up and Barney, their manager starts to experiment. The guitar is changed, leads are swapped but he ends up scratching his head - it looks like a blown amp. This doesn't deter the youngsters though. Guy on drums and Jon on bass continue to plough through the song while Jamie sings and plays air guitar - the trouble is that it still sounds damn good!

At the end of the song Jamie laughs and apologises. Jon makes the dry comment "I'm really glad he tuned his guitar before that song - it made all the difference." After a minute of checking equipment it's obvious that it won't work.

Jamie then offers up a compromise to the audience. "We're going to pretend we've just finished an amazing set, and then you guys can go mad." They feign a huge climax, falling on the floor, and the crowd do, indeed, go mad.

This was a real test of character, and Rueben have proved their worth. Most bands would have stopped mid song and sulked off. They've got the charisma to carry on regardless and turn a bad situation to their favour. Tonight they have proved their worth.
