Godspeed You Black Emperor! / Town & Country - London, The Scala Monday 20th November 2000
This was my first time at the Scala, and the first time I'd gone to see Godspeed live. With three exceptional records behind them I was keen to see how they could recreate the sound live.

We came in halfway through the support acts set. Town and Country's set was never going to set the world on fire for me, as the music never really seemed to get going. It was more like music to do the hoovering to - in other words, background music.

The place was a sell out, with only 20 tickets available on the door, and a friend of mine from the USA had queued for one and a half hours to get his well-deserved ticket!

The background visuals came on just before Godspeed simply walked on stage, plugged in and began. The set, I can only describe as simply amazing. They sounded exactly like they do on record, with the music slowly building up to an ear deafening crescendo, and all along coupled with the floor vibrating along with the tube trains running under the venue - very spooky! Most people paid attention to every note, however quiet (truly amazing, since this is London!), with only the odd twat with their mobile phone going off. There was scarcely a pause between each song, as they either merged together, or as one song would draw to a close, then another member of the band would start the next.

During the second encore one of the drummers walked amongst the audience with a single drum, and added to the sound by kicking any cans and plastic cups around.

Not a word was uttered throughout the whole set - and to be honest, it wasn't needed.

It was only after the crowd bayed for a third encore, that one of the band finally spoke. One of the drummers came onstage, the house lights went up, and the sound system was turned off. "We'd love to play some more, but I've fucked up my hand and I can't play."

It seemed like they had had a good gig too. Two hours of live music like I've never heard before. Truly spectacular.
