The Monsoon Bassoon / Rothko - London, The Octopad Saturday 18th September 1999
Billed as "an all night psych party of beauty and decadence" this sounded like a very interesting gig. Coupled with the fact that I have been starved of all things live Bassoon for some time, it was off to the stomping ground of the band - Stoke Newington, or Stokey as they prefer to call it. BYO drink and £3 admission made it an even better prospect.

First on at 00:30 were Rothko. A great set went off without a hitch, and most of the crowd seemed to enjoy the performance. Mark is begining to toy with the crowd now..."Here's one from the 30's....wasn't a hit then so wont be a hit now". One girl standing behind me was a trite perplexed. "When are they going to sing?". "Is this the instrumental interlude?". I had to explain to her that this them, doing what Rothko do. "But I want some singing!". Oh well - some people seem to never be able to grasp the plot. It's about doing your own individual thing. It's about pushing the musical boundaries. And most of all, it's about opening up your ears and mind and listen to the great music that is out there waiting for you to cherish.

I would be the first to admit that I didn't really get Rothko at the first gig I saw them at - but after buying some material and listening at home, and then seeing them live again, it all began to make sense. They are a band following their own path, not afraid of breaking the mould that people expect to see as a band, and pushing the theory to the edge and beyond.

The Monsoon Bassoon are another band doing the same for music as Rothko are. Not afraid to go out on a limb and do their own thing. It was yet another great performance by the Bassoon, marred only by the microphones being turned down too low - this didn't really spoil it for me though, as we were standing so close that all the words could be heard without the aid of a mic. One of the surprise stand out tracks was the first public airing of the Bassoon's version of Rothko's 'Seventyseven A' called 'N73', which is to be released as a split single with Rothko covering 'Fuck You Fuck Your Telescope'. It started off as barely recognisable, until Laurie's bass came though with the main riff. It has been completely re-arranged by the band and sounds wonderful. It builds up slowly into a crescendo, when both Kavus and Dan's guitars are at full volume playing the main riff along with Laurie. Superb. Can't wait for the release!

Unfortunately I had to go not long after the Bassoon had finished, as I wasn't feeling too well, (not alcohol I hasten to add), so I missed Max Trundra, but I'm told that he whipped the crowd into a frenzy.

A good time was had by all. A chance to meet some old and new friends and generally have a good time. Not so much of a gig but more of a party with the bands playing in your living room. Nice work!
