Les Savy Fav - London, The Dublin Castle Tuesday 16th January 2001
I'd been told by loads of people to check out Les Savy Fav live, so not having heard a note by them, I trooped down into the depths of Camden indieland, and into the holy grail of indieism - The Dublin Castle. It must be strange for a US band to come to the UK and play their first gig in a tiny venue, backed by two very dodgy bands. Apparently this was a "warm up" before going to Europe, for the tour proper, and a good opportunity to get used to the hired equipment.

The lead singer, Tim Harrington, a black bearded, scraggly haired tall man, was already bouncing around during the line check, fiddling with his box of noises and dancing around, while asking the audience for a flashlight, so they could see what was wrong with the bass amp. Seth Jabour (guitar) and Harrison Haynes (drums) meanwhile jammed a version of "Close To Me" by the Cure. This was getting more surreal by the minute!

Then it was all systems go! Tim immediately started bouncing around the stage, juggling with two mics and rolling around the floor. From time to time he would thrust another mic into Seth or Syd Butler's (bass) face, for them to bawl out some lyrics. He immediately had the audience on his side with his performance, which veered from insane to comedy to scary all in the space of a few seconds.

Meanwhile the rest of the band carry on regardless, pumping out their stop/start twisted rhythms, while Tim barks out his sometimes-incomprehensible rants. Tim then jumps into the crowd, squaring up to people while still ranting. He then hangs from the rafters - gets the audience to all kneel down, and then declares the last few people standing "our gods" - grabs a camera from an unsuspecting photographer and starts to take photos of the crowd, the stage, the band, his belly - rolls on the floor some more - spits and sprays beer at us. We all have a great time!

This is such a refreshing change - a band that doesn't take themselves too seriously, can have fun, and still pump out great tunes. Class!
