Brassy / Fiji / Sgt. Rock - London, Dingwalls Thursday 9th March 2000
So, on to the venue by the canal, Dingwalls. They used to have a fine selection of beer there as I remember, so I used to look forward to gigs here. Now they don't - boo!

The first act on was Sgt Rock. Dismal - a 7-8 looks at the watch at least!!! Dispiriting.

Thank heavens for Fiji. Great sounds, great guitar playing, awesome passion. I happened to notice the keyboard/backing singer at the bar when I arrived, simply because she is staggeringly attractive (at that point I didn't know she was in the band), with the sexiest tummy I have seen for a long while! I digress. Fiji made most interesting songs and the guitar player/singer (forgive my ignorance on names) [that'll be Jamie Hince from the now ex Scarfo - ed] was great, playing 12-string acoustic at one point with a stubby beer bottle - which later got smashed to smithereens across the strings of his electric guitar. Definitely a barely glanced at one look at the watch performance. I'm glad I'll be seeing them again soon, supporting Elastica.

Brassy are, well, Brassy. Loud, raucous and completely in your face! And great with it. Another band with a most gorgeous bass player (My Vitriol, JJ72, Agnes are other examples). Plus the irrepressible Muffin Spencer, the girl could cheerlead for indie-dom. Starting with 'Put You Right', their blisteringly brief songs (anything over 3.5 mins is an epic) are full of energy that defies you not to dance. A sort of punk/rock/hip-hop mix, with the drummer alternately smashing his drum kit to bits, with scratching at a turntable, you can't help but get infected with their enthusiasm. Songs like 'Good Times' and 'Work It Out', have the crowd at the front bouncing away quite happily. Then we get the Brassy chant (give me the B to the R to the A to the S to the S to the Y - BRASSY) and segueing into my fave track, 'I Can't Wait'. Ending with 'I Gotta Beef' (or as Muffin puts it - I gorra beeft wit choo), they shout "Thanks, bye" and are gone! No encore...bollox - just play the set and get to the bar. Wonderful stuff and a no looks performance - unless you count occasional wistful glances at the bass player, of whom even Muffin sang her praises, before praising the guitar player and launching into 'You Got It'. Well, I for one got it that's for sure.
