The Kills / Young People - London, ULU Wednesday 21st May 2003
Young People: there isn’t a normal song structure (verse/chorus etc), just a basic beat, noise and melody/tune is carried only in the voice, polite clapping from the audience for everything. I can only assume they’re ashamed of the name as they don’t look like teenagers. They don’t hold my attention or look like they will do anything interesting so I wander off.

Kills: I wasn’t sure if they would use session backing musicians for live performance, but they don’t. Also I wasn’t sure that two people with just a drum/backing machine would hold my attention, or be interesting enough visually, but funnily enough I discover they are.

In the first song the sensuality/sexual chemistry underlying what they do becomes apparent from the way that the girl (VV) moves - but just in case you don’t get it they underline it and make it REAL OBVIOUS in the last song of the set.

I find myself wondering how to describe them, a guitarist and smoking singer behind a curtain of dark hair seems somewhat throwaway and unfair, and I do like the way the singer turns sideways quite often, facing (Hotel) implying its all about stuff between them and not entirely directed to the audience. Then we get a change and (VV) plays guitar too (for 'Fuck The People' – one of the highlights of the set for me). For the audience, it looks as if 'Fried My Little Brains' is the main crowd pleaser, as that’s when the moshpit seems to get going, but maybe that’s just because it was the single getting most airplay.

The encore is the other highlight, (VV) doing 'Monkey 23' (solo), and then entire band for 'Hitched'. A pleasant evening, in which the songs get stuck in my head and resound all the way home.
