Ten Grand / Grand Ulena - Chicago, Fireside Bowl Friday 14th February 2003
When I arrived at The Fireside Grand Ulena had just started their set. What the fuck is this?

The ex Dazzling Killmen bass player Darin Gray stage left and totally engrossed in his own world, eyes closed. Every now and then shooting glances and laughing at the drummer Danny McClain… the drummer, the drummer… un-bloody believable! Fast isn’t a word you can really use and give justice to. He somehow makes sounds like its coming from a guitar – just a fast as the fastest guitar playing, and then slow slow slow with the lightest of touches. Oh yes – the guitar… Chris Trull plays like a demon too. Up and down and up and down the fret-board, faster and faster.

How can I describe the music itself? Well, very fast playing, fast time changes, then stop… stop… grrrrrrrrrrr fast… stop… tap… tinkle… roarrrrrrrrrrrr! It’s like a cross between Pinback and DEP in some strange universe. It’s very hypnotic and extremely watchable. Check the album ‘Gateway To Dignity’ and you’ll get an idea – better live of course!

Ten Grand bulldozer’d through another mental set tonight, as they tour what seems like the whole of the USA. This band are extremely addictive and nice guys too boot. Watch out for when they come to the UK.

Then the after-show party from the Metro gig arrives at The Fireside, with DJ’s and bowling and lots of people I haven’t seen in a age. What a cool place! Sweet!
